Support - Ask here - [Fixed] IPs, our private data now publically available
red oak - Tue Dec 16, 2008 5:57 pm Post subject: [Fixed] IPs, our private data now publically available I noticed few days ago that IPs became available on "History" pages for anyone that wishes to see them.
On Sunday I sent an e.mail to Administration:
Quote: | I just noticed that you made IPs, our private and personal data, available to anyone that wishes to see them. Is there any reason to make that personal data available to the entire world?
I'm absolutely appalled that in this age when we all strive for internet security our privacy is compromised without any notification whatsoever.
Please kindly respect my privacy and remove my IP from public view
Thank you
Red |
Of course, my e.mail got ignored.
Just for your info, if one knows how to do it, many IPs can be traced down to your front door. Is this something that you want? I'm sure that anyone who will trace it is not going to ring your bell to deliver you a dozen of roses... I will not click on Yarolds until the IPs are removed from public view and I would suggest that you file your objections as well.

I noticed the same a long time ago, but it is no different than the little man in Metalteo's sig here on the forum which also shows my IP---it only shows the IP of the person actually looking at the page, namely, yourself--it's not "public"--whoever accesses the page will only see their own IP address.
EDIT-My bad--thought the problem was with "public" viewing of your IP, was just pointing out that it isn't public. And also, the IP is on the bottom of all the pages of the exchange, not just history, although I can't figure out why I'd need to know my IP address.

I used the "e.mail" function on this forum. I'm enclosing copy that came to my mailbox (header included). Perhaps it's not working as it should.
And thank you for removing the option of displaying IPs from the History pages.
@ Theposum1 - I don't see what relevance your reply has to the problem in my original post...

I've just clicked on numerous people's profiles, and history, and dynasty and main and several other areas as well. I can't see anyone's IP at all - could you take a screen shot of were you've found the problem so the administrators can help? (obviously if you post it in the forum you should block out your actual IP address, or e-mail it to the admins directly )

It's at the bottom of the page right above the server time.

I was also able to see everyone's IPs a few days ago. That customizable option appears to have been removed now
Yarold - Wed Dec 17, 2008 6:19 am
It of course never happen.
red oak - Wed Dec 17, 2008 6:56 am
It was on history page (as recenty as Sunday morning my time) under "Customize". One of the options for "Visible columns" was "IPs". When checked, it would display IPs of every player that clicked my links. I do have a screenshot of the page displaying the players and their IPs, but since that option has now been removed there is no need for posting it here.

These are not the IPs you are looking for...

I don't really see what the big deal is anyway. Unless you have a dynamic IP, which most people don't, the most information that one could get from it is your internet provider. Your internet provider isn't going to give anyone information unless you did something illegal. Beside that, next time you reboot your modem there's a good chance you'd get a new IP anyway, so your ISP wouldn't be able to track it to you anyway...

You're missing the point jennielynn

That is true but I would feel safer if you take the IP off anyway.

No, I see your point. I just don't understand why people freak out about it.

And I don't understand why people who don't understand the issue get involved in the debate...
This issue is now resolved. Option to view the members IPs has been removed and you are free to share as many personal details as you wish. I would love your phone number Jennielynn & would love to know what is your yearly income... and I hope that you won't freak out about it... well, why would you?
Merry Christmas!

Well not true, or lets say, not true for me. I have for years now the same Ip-adress from my provider (cable modem). I am at this provider allready for 10+ (maybe allready 15 - i dont want to chekc that now) years and my ip only changed once because they changed something in their system.
Metalteo - Thu Dec 18, 2008 11:15 am
Issue has been solved. This was an error.
There's no need to ;eave this topic open any longer.
